College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Representative

The beauty of how the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences works towards a high quality level of education for their departments comes from the fact this college strives for learning experiences that are interdisciplinary and intercultural. Humboldt State University is unique for its special dynamic between the North Coast Community and the students. These two are integrated as it is often the case that students of Humboldt State University’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are active in the local community in various ways. Be it through political activism, exhibiting art or performing in local venues, writing for local publications, et cetera, the dynamic is key to the quality of our education. In a time of budget reform, often the College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are asked to tighten their belts in impractical ways. With proposals to tighten or cut entirely integral resources to the student body, students and faculty are forced to reconsider how they can still achieve the same quality of education. As part of my goal to keep Humboldt State University, and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, in the ranks of CSUs as an institution that provides high grade education, I have realized that to do so requires a level of representation that I ask from you, the student body.

You may recognize my name, Bernadette or Bernie, or my email, bmm579, from various posters around campus advocating for the funding of Humboldt State University’s Third Street Gallery. Through my advocacy for the funding of the Gallery, I found myself continuing to advocate with other CSU students in Sacramento for the funding of higher education. I will continue this fight for the funding of our futures alongside my peers as long as I am given the ability to do so. Many of my peers have seen this fire I am willing to let loose. Especially as I still am fighting for Third Street Gallery. Without hesitancy, I am seeking to find ways to participate in other forms of advocacy for the needs of my peers who face similar conflicts. I would like this opportunity for candidacy as your representative for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to give you my best.

As a standing Junior at Humboldt State University, a Gallery Assistant at Third Street Gallery, an alumna of Orange County School of the Arts and a past Ticktocker of National Charity League, there is little doubt of my ability to fulfill my ideals to represent my peers. I will strive to dedicate myself and my time for you as your representative of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, because nothing is more fulfilling than the success of my peers.
